International Academy of Veterinary Chiropractic course

Tamsin has just embarked on a five module course in veterinary chiropractic. This involves five contact days per module in Bournemouth. The course is attended by vets and human chiropractors so there is plenty of scope for exchange of ideas. The best part so far is having the opportunity to look at the nervous system from a completely different perspective, considering the concept of ‘functional neurology’.

Jake

Pets Age:
7 Months
Pet Type:
Male, Labrador
Problem:
Hip dysplasia with severe subluxation of his left femoral head
Treatment:
physiotherapy

Jake presented to the SMART Clinic in December 2011, at the young age of 7 months. His owners had noticed a mild lameness affecting his left hind in October, but this deteriorated and he was referred to Mr Butterworth at Weighbridge Referral Centre for an Orthopaedic assessment. Mr Butterworth reported the finding of hip dysplasia with severe subluxation of his left femoral head. The plan was to start physiotherapy and if hindlimb function could not be improved, then a total hip replacement was to be considered.

Jessie

Pets Age:
8 year old
Pet Type:
Female, Chocolate Labrador
Problem:
Severe hind limb paresis
Treatment:
A rehabilitation programme on an aquatic treadmill

‘Jessie’ has been with her current owners for nearly three and a half years. She started to attend the Smart Clinic in July 2011 after an acute episode of severe hind limb paresis. At the time she had been given a guarded prognosis. Radiographs had been taken and revealed spondylosis from T13-L4 and at the lumbosacral junction. Osteoarthritis of the hips, particularly the left was also discovered. The radiographs also showed that a metal crimp was present in the right stifle, showing that she must have had cruciate surgery before starting her new life with her current owners.
